How does Madden NFL relate to the Industry?

No one can deny Electronic Arts Sports games position in the whole video games industry.  EA is the video games company which published hundreds fantasy games. But have anyone once tried thinking which exact games bring success to EA company. Here are two charts providing by EA show the top ten games in EA in sales.

[51]

As we can see that the two best selling series of EA Sports are FIFA Soccer and Madden NFL which have a great impact on EA Sports and brought to this company million dollars by million copies sale on all kinds of platforms across the country.

Electronic Arts' Madden series is a sport game which is believed as greater than any in professional sports. The Madden series has helped build and destroy console empires for nearly two decades since the day it first released. It was the fundamental factor that boosted EA from a small independent developer to an international publishing giant. Indeed, the Madden series is believed as one of the most powerful game franchises on the continent. Let's assess the impact that Madden NFL franchise has on the video games as a whole and on Electronic Arts as well. Firstly, we should we take a look back at how EA took on all comers to create the highest grossing series North America has ever seen. [16]

This video shows the football games had showed up by time before Madden released.

How was John Madden NFL created?

"I'm not putting my name on it if it's not real."

-John Madden-

As we can see, the football game market was hardly crowed before 1986. Tecmo Bowl was still a year away, and most of the attempts out there were still streamlined arcade experiences that made little attempt to simulate the sport realistically. [16]. Electronic Arts didn't really know how they were going to be any different, but they knew who could give them the answer. Let take a deeper look into the history, so we would easier comprehend where and how the idea of Madden NFL video game had been created and what pivotal or fundamental factor this franchise has brought to the table.

In 1984, the original Madden Football game was commissioned by EA Founder Trip Hawkins and was originally set to run on an Apple II computer. [1].  Besides, as we already mentioned in the Background Information, John Madden is a legend in the sport, particularly American football. Plus, there were few people out there that could lend more credibility to a gridiron sim. However, it was not easy for EA to access John Madden, so the company's crew decided to catch him on a train to a broadcast. EA's president Trip Hawkins, programmer Robin Antonick and some of the staff counted upon the legendary broadcaster. Yet, after discussing, they realized the fact that John Madden was not a man to be compromised with. [16].

The reason Madden rejected the initial build of the game and refused to endorse it was there were only seven players able to be shown on each side of the ball due to technical limitations. [1]. "If it isn't 11 on 11, it isn't real football," Madden declared. The team was hoping to limit the players on each side to six or seven to help speed things up on the limited Apple II hardware. But Madden's ultimatum was clear: "I'm not putting my name on it if it's not real." [16]

The issues were eventually worked out and the game was released in the late 1980s, but it did not do well at retailers. The point we can see here is what EA crew as well as John Madden desired to do with their brilliant creation in their very first steps. They wanted to bring the most realistic simulation and the best playbooks on the game market by John Madden Football. Though they did not do well at first, but EA was not ready to give up on what would soon become its most well known game.

What did Madden NFL bring to the table?

Franchise Mode - Realistic Simulation

In 1988, Electronic Arts made an evolution by adding "Franchise Mode" to Madden that allows players to play multiple seasons, make off-season draft picks, and trade players. [33]. Within Franchise Mode, players take on the role of General Manager and manage all things from contracts, free agency, and draft picks, to hiring and firing coaches. Furthermore, the player also acts as a head coach-like character, chooses which players to play, makes substitutions, runs practices, practices game plans. Players may play with any of the NFL's 32 franchises, and can choose whether or not to have trade deadlines, salary caps, and if they want to begin their franchise with a 49-round fantasy draft of all active NFL players. Additionally, players can upload created teams for use in the game as well. Once in game, players run training camp, play in preseason games and compete in a regular 16-game NFL season which includes playoffs and the Super Bowl. The player also has the option to play any game in the simulation. Most versions of Madden give a player 30 years with their franchise, sometimes with an opportunity to apply for the Hall of Fame at the end of the simulation. [8].

For instance, we will scan at once the dominant and remarkable technology development of each released Madden NFL to bring realistic simulation to football game in the video game industry since 2000s.

  • In Madden NFL 2004 (released in 2003), EA Sports created the new Playmaker tool, using the right analog joystick found on each of the adjustments previously unavailable in prior installments of the franchise. [34].

  • As we already mentioned in the Background Information part, EA signed an exclusive license with the NFL and the NFLPA to give the company the exclusive rights to use the NFL's teams, stadia, and players in a video game in 2004 through 2009. [35]. Afterwards, EA did not stop trying to enhance Madden's technology development. In an attempt to re-balance the players experience, EA gave a Playmaker Tool to the defense in Madden 2005 which was released in 2004. Similar to the offensive Playmaker Tool, the defensive Playmaker allows the player to make pre-snap defensive adjustments. EA Sports further utilized the right analog joystick on defense by creating the "Hit Stick", an option on defense that allows the controlled player to make big hits, with a simple flick, that increases the chances the ball carrier will fumble. [8]. Also introduced for the first time is the "Formation Shift." This new feature allowed players to shift their formation in the pre-snap audible menu without actually changing the play. Through Madden NFL 2005, EA also added "EA Sports Radio", a fictional show that plays during the menu screen of Franchise mode to provide a greater sense of a storyline during gameplay. [8].

  • In Madden NFL 06 (released in 2005), the "Truck Stick" was introduced. This feature allows the offensive player to lower his shoulder and break a tackle. Another new feature is the Superstar Mode, which allows the player to take control of a rookie, and progress through his career. [36]. Also, EA sports added the Smart Route. This means that when pressing a hot route to the corresponding receiver, you put the analog stick down and the receiver will run to the first down, and you can throw him the ball. [8]

  • In Madden NFL 07, EA introduced Lead Blocker Controls which allow users to control blockers during running plays. [8]

  • In Madden NFL 08, the Weapons feature was added, allowing superstar players to be noticed. [8].

In August 2006, EA Sports debuted NFL Head Coach, which utilized the Madden engine to create a football management simulation. The game was criticized as buggy and unrealistic. EA Tiburon rebuilt the game from the ground up, addressing flaws and creating a proprietary engine, over the course of three years. NFL Head Coach 09 was released on August 12, 2008 bundled with the special edition of Madden NFL 09 and as a standalone game on September 2, 2008.

We can take a look back at the video below which was already mentioned in the Background Information part to understand more about Madden franchise's long way to achieve success.

[70]

These improvements above were EA's brilliant evolution for Madden for bringing the reality into characters of this football game since early 2000s which brought to EA company millions dollars by each released Madden NFL. The games have grown as time went along and technology improved by years. The Madden Football series has been one that gamers have truly enjoyed over the years. From the 2D original with fake teams to the fully licensed, ultra-realistic 3D version that we all play today. [1]

Annual EA Super Bowl Simulation

Once more issue that this franchise brings to the table is the annual EA Super Bowl Simulation. Since 2004, EA games has run a simulation of the Super Bowl using the latest game in the "Madden NFL" series and announced the result. Seven out of the last nine Super Bowl champions have been accurately predicted by the EA SPORTS Madden NFL Super Bowl simulation. EA also releases a computer-generated description of the simulated game as if it were a summary of the real Super Bowl. [8][38]

Here are the simulated results and the actual Super Bowl games' results.

No one can deny the accuracy of EA Super Bowl Simulation every year since 2004. This more likely proves the fact of Madden NFL reality and that turns Madden NFL to be a canonization in the video game industry because this franchise impact on the industry in historical and cultural aspects. [37]

The Madden Curse

Madden NFL not only impact on the industry growth but also influence to the social aspect by a strange event which occurred since 1999.

Before 1999, every annual installment of the Madden NFL series primarily featured Madden on its cover. From 1999 till present, players having been taking turn to appear on "Madden" cover. It’s a nice honor for a player from a small-market team. But history has shown it’s not always a good thing to be on the "Madden" cover. All of them have experienced a decline in performance or serious injury. Let's take look at what exactly happened to those people who have been on the "Madden" cover in the past. [45][46]

  • Garrison Hearst (1999): Badly broke his ankle, which was so severe that Hearst missed two full seasons and was never the same again.
  • Barry Sanders (2000): Retired one week before training camp. Sanders would never play again.
  • Eddie George (2001): Career season, but fumbled in playoffs as top-seeded Titans lost first game to Ravens.
  • Daunte Culpepper (2002): 4-7 record before season-ending knee injury.
  • Marshall Faulk (2002): Ankle injury, missed two games, never rushed for 1,000 yards again.
  • Michael Vick (2004): Fractured fibula one day after video game was released, missed 11 games; Pro Bowl next 2 seasons; obvious issues since then.
  • Ray Lewis (2005): Broke wrist, missed one game; first season without interception; missed 10 games next year with thigh injury.
  • Donovan McNabb (2006): Sports hernia in first game, missed seven games; feuded with Terrell Owens all year; had been to five straight Pro Bowls, hasn't been since.
  • Shaun Alexander (2007): Fractured foot, missed six games; fewer yards and TDs in '06 AND '07 than in '04 OR '05.
  • Vince Young (2008): Missed 1 game with quad injury; led Titans to first playoff appearance in four years.
  • Brett Favre (2009): Feuded with Packers, traded to Jets, horrible down the stretch (lost 4 of last 5).
  • Troy Polamalu/Larry Fitzgerald (2010): Polamalu only played five games due to knee injuries, Steelers missed playoffs; Fitzgerald wasn’t affected much (97 receptions, 1,092 yards, 13 TD, Pro Bowl).
  • Drew Brees (2011): Injured his knee in a game against the Steelers. The New Orleans Saints made it to the playoffs, but lost to the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks in the first round. It was losing the worst playoff team in history.
  • Peyton Hillis (2012): Endured several injuries throughout the season as both his health and attitude deteriorated. He ended up playing in just 10 games all season, and many of those were at diminished capacity.

[46][47]

This seems to be a controversial issue of American sport. Some people claim that was real, the others believe it was just some kinds of superstitions. "Bad luck" happens to everyone just about sooner or later, but people only take it especial because each event tends to fit the pattern. However, this could be considered as an impact which Madden NFL game influences to the NFL.

How did Madden advance in the Video Game industry overall?

Millions Sold Copies every Releasing on Platforms

Been through more than a decade in franchise mode and its licensed soundtracks, Madden gained massive sale figures which already mentioned in the Sales Figures part. According to EA, Madden has sold millions of copies. For example with the Madden NFL 08, it has sold 6.7 million copies in North America. That's 1.4 million more than Halo 3, 2.2 million more than Grand Theft Auto IV, and 3.7 million more than Super Mario Galaxy. [48]

However, Madden has faced one problem of moving backward. The reason was lacking of innovation after removing the worst opponent SEGA in 2004 after EA gained the NFL exclusive license. Sports are battles between opponents. Remove the competition and there's really no point at all. In business, competition creates two things: Lower prices and product innovation. EA's exclusive NFL license cuts into both. It was competitive pricing that pushed EA to spend big for the exclusive rights to the NFL license. For instance, SEGA managed its product that cost $20 in 2004 while Madden NFL 2005 cost $50. [49]

Indeed, since receiving the NFL exclusive license, Madden 2005 (came out in 2004) did some incredible things. It put a focus on improving how you play defense, introduced the hit stick, and added a Super Bowl celebration complete with confetti and players hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. The Franchise mode added some amazing depth, requiring gamers to manage the personalities of their stars and keep an eye on the team morale rating. The draft and free agent signing elements were revamped as well. There was also a radio show that played during Franchise mode that talked about the season. [49]. As a result, Madden NFL brought to EA Sports 7.15, 7.59, 9.03, and 9.99 million dollars by Madden NFL 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007, respectively on all platforms across the nation, according Vgchartz.com.

However, the series has actually been on a slide lately, in terms of sales. Madden NFL 12 moved less than six million copies total, which is not great for a franchise that three years ago was edging eight million. In fact the franchise has been losing a million in sales or so every year since Madden 10 came out. [22]. In fact, Madden 2010, 2011, and 2012 brought to EA Sports 7.39, 6.35, and 4.64 million dollars, respectively on platforms, according to Vgchartz.com. Some people advocate that Madden NFL 11 is a different experience than Madden NFL 10. They believe that the game play has seen improvements thanks to better animations and smarter AI. But others claim that even Madden NFL 11 does not have any difference from Madden NFL 10. They doubt the Madden series would be considerably better if developer Tiburon had a competitor threatening it each year. [49]. Many gamers afraid this games will never be anything more than a dumb distraction if money still matters more than innovation.

Madden NFL 2011 Review

[28]

Madden NFL 13 launched on August 28th. Powered by the all-new Infinity Engine, true player impact and authentic momentum transfer ensure that no two plays ever look or feel the same. In other words, the NFL professional players are depicted exactly as they are- with their personalities, stances, and bodily characteristics. [37]. This releasing were sold 1.65 million copies during the game’s first week on sale. EA announced that Madden had a record-breaking first day, and the franchise has now had its best first week of this console generation. Madden is the latest breakthrough of EA. EA Sports executive vice president Andrew Wilson noted, “The overwhelming feedback is that this is the best Madden NFL game in a generation. Fans are competing in record numbers, and we expect that type of engagement to only grow with the start of the NFL regular season, as fans connect with their favorite teams and players through our game.” [50]. Madden NFL 13 is believed to bring great success to EA this year once again.

Madden 13 Review

Madden NFL series' current Impact and Position

Obama Campaign Puts Ads in Video Games

President Obama has bought ads space in EA Sports games, including Madden NFL. President Obama wants gamers in battleground states to vote early while they’re playing Madden football. Dave Madden, EA’s senior vice president of global media solutions states, “It was made clear in the last election that reaching consumers through video games makes a significant impact, so it’s no surprise to see this tactic used once again in such a competitive election.”  [52-58]

Obama has tried this before. Back in 2008 his team tapped EA to run virtual signage ads looking to encourage early voting in states like Ohio, Nevada, Colorado, Iowa, New Hampshire and Virginia in 18 games during the fall. Those states are the battlegrounds getting hit with the political messaging. Based on surveys conducted by EA during the 2008 ad effort, gamers were 120 percent more likely to feel positively about the candidate and 50 percent more likely to consider voting for him after seeing the in-game ads. “It was made clear in the last election that reaching consumers through video games makes a significant impact, so it’s no surprise to see this tactic used once again in such a competitive election,” said Madden. "The video game industry has gone through significant change since the last election, especially with the popularity of online, mobile and social games, and we’ve seen an expansion of our audience as a result," Madden added. "Video games actively and emotionally engaged consumers in a way that no other medium really can and that translates into a big opportunity for political candidates.”  [52-58]

The Obama campaign begins running ads across multiple video game titles from Electronic Arts, including the new Madden NFL 13. The ads are aimed at encouraging the gaming demographic to take advantage of early voting in these states. [52-58]

This event proves the popularity and great impact of Madden not only on the video games industry but on the entire society as well.

Here is the video clip about President Obama appeared in Madden NFL 11.

Promotional Products

This is a kind of marketing plan for Madden game in 2010. But this marketing plan was hilarious with many strange products. "Maddenize" products consisted of Doritos with two unique flavors. Stadium Nacho recreates the stale, synthetic gooey flavor of a plastic trough of warm tortilla chips, while Tailgater BBQ perfectly encapsulates the feeling of sitting on the hot bumper of a pickup truck while devouring hot parking lot meat. [59]. Tough Turf Astro Flavored Chew helps people enjoy authentic Astroturf taste. There is also a Madden-meal with a delightful combination of Thanksgiving turkey and a little holiday pigskin.  People can transform their shower into the feeling of 13-gallons of high fructose corn syrup and ice splashing on the back of theor neck with Old Spice Gatorade Body Wash. There is also Parking Lot Puke and Urinal Mint Scented Glade Plugins. And finally, Hot Dog Flavored Water is the crazy package combined water and hot dog. [59]

Soundtracks

Madden NFL does not have any branches in movies, films, books, or music. But we found that there are some soundtracks which become very popular hits and many people like them. Here is a video we found about top 20 songs from the Madden NFL games.

[75]

Overall,

Those parts above are all the issues of how Madden NFL relates to the game industry, how this franchise develops currently, what fundamental factors it brings to the table in the society, and more importantly the impact of Madden not only on EA Sports but also on the entire industry. EA Sports put their efforts into their brilliant idea of bringing the reality into video games. People found in the football hall of fame can be found within the Madden NFL football games accompanied by their statistics and characteristics. Without a doubt, EA's Madden NFL series surely continues to make a great impact on the American history and provide a form of documentation of the American culture.
