What is currently going on....?

Radio Fairness Act 2012: Initiated by Chaffetz and Polis The Radio Fairness act is an act devised to lower the royalty rates that online radio internet workers pay. This would bring the cost of music around what cable and satellite already pay.  As of right now Internet radio sources pay the most, cable and satellite are next and normal radio pays nothing. [7]

Royalty Rates: This is a way to assess the impact of a royalty commitment in a telecommunication contract to the business interests of the other consuming parties.  Royalties are usually agreed upon a percentage of gross net revenues from the use of an advantage or a steady price per unit of an item or such. [6]

SoundExchange: Is a nonprofit performance rights organization that converges royalties over sound recording copyright owners and certain artists for non-interactive digital communication, including satellite and internet radio. [5]

Important Radio Figures

Martine Rothblatt: Founded in July 1990 as Satellite CD Radio Inc,was a satellite service company. It played a wide variety of genres, commercial free, and is uncensored.  The name eventually was not working so it got switched to Sirius in 1999.  Sirius XM Radio got its name  when their main competitor XM Radio and Sirius combined and that is   where  there new name Sirius XM radio came to be in July in 2008. [8]

Howard Stern:  Also known as the shock jock, is a very controversial radio personality. He is best known for breaking one of the biggest rules of radio, and that is censorship. The content he puts out over the air is very explicit. He has been censored many times over the years and has cost the broadcast stations he was a part of at least $4 million. He does this because he feels he can. He feels he has the right to express himself how he chooses. Stern feels very strongly on free speech. He believes so strongly in it that he signed a $500 million 5 year contract with Sirius (satellite) radio to avoid being censored. [2][3]

Digital vs. Analog Radio

Analog Radio: Also known as analog transmission,is a method to express voice, information, image, and signal. This uses a continuous signal which changes in amplitude.  Their are three types of analog modulation: Frequency Modulation (FM), Amplitude Modulation (AM), or no modulation at all. Currently analog radio is still more popular then digital radio. [8]

Digital Radio:(Founded in 1980's) Also know as digital radio broadcasting, the analog signal  is compressed into ways such as a mp2, and then is transmitted using a  digital modulation layout. The idea behind digital radio is a wayto have  improved audio quality, have less fading problems, increase the number of  radio programs, and decrease the transmission power. [9]
