Future of Magazine Industry

With the current digital impact on magazine industry, there are a lot of controversial ideas. The Veronis Suher Stevenson estimated that the total revenues of magazine corporations would jump to 15.7%. [49]. It also predict the futher improvement, as print advertising recovers modestly and digital spending accelerates, the total estimated magazine revenues would be $23.7 billion, based on the current statistics. [49]

As publishers begin to charge for the content online, the revenue would rise more rapidly. PriceWaterhouseCoopers estimates that the magazine revenues from digital circulation would reach to $ 611 million by the year 2015. [58]. As the fast growth of technology like tablets and smartphone, Veronis Suhler Stevenson also predicts the digital advertising revenues would increase as well. They are from digital circulation and mobile apps expense. The revenues are estimated to grow from $1.05 billion today to $2.03 billion in the year 2015. [49].

However, there are still some experts never support the digital magazine. This would bring some opposite opinions. Let's watch what experts predict about the future of magazine industry.

[37]

[38]

The future is not looking very promising for the print side of the magazine. The change to the e-books and e-readers have really harmed the purchasing of hard copies of the magazines. Often times people opt for the much cheaper route in the electronic systems. The problem with this is what are the companies going to do with the hard copies of their magazines if no one is buying them? One opinion from the author of Panic in the Media Industry says that because consumers want to pay for a subscription that offers them unlimited access to unlimited sources. All this access would cause the industry to lose money because they would have to extend sources to one another to provide the customer what they wanted. This would be the only way to keep them in business is make the customer happy.

Predictions for the Next Move of Magazine Industry in the Future

Magazines in the twenty-first century are continuing many of the trends that made them successful throughout their history, including building relationships with readers, adapting to change, being supported by advertisers, and defining major issues in society. Magazines continue to be successful in their print formats but are expanding their content with Web sites and other electronic offerings. If magazines are to continue to be produced in print format they will no doubtfully be advances in there format.

Smells and Sounds

For along time there has been "scratch and sniff" ads in magazines mostly for shampoo and perfume ads. What would magazines be like if each add or even article had smells that went along with them. This could be a way to improve the experience of consumers and might be easier to do then trying to incorporate into a laptop or Ipad. There could also be a push to put music or sound effects into print magazines almost like greeting cards. This would also increase the experience of consumers but seems less likely as this can already be done easily in the digital format.

Digital

Whether or not advanced are made in print format, there has been and will continue to be in digital format. One futuristic idea would be a digital portable format that would be in the shape of a normal magazine but is digital and can be updated with new issues of the magazine.[33]

[33]

Concepts like "E Roll" above show how the magazines can be made more convenient and efficient.

3D Content and Holographs

Another idea is bringing 3D content without the use of glasses is another concepts that is currently being tested. The idea of  using your hand to read, turn pages and interact with the content on the screen, all virtually.

Hologram Devices

[35]

In the future, the z generation will be a very good savvy-tech generation, where they will probably use electronic devices to read magazines more than this current generation. This feature is the hologram. Magazine apps on devices such as the iPad and Google Nexus can use this Hologram feature to have a unique and an interactive experience with the consumer.

[39]

Mini-Mag on Soft Drink Bottles and other products

[34]

This is the concept of miniature magazines appearing on products of all kinds. In April 2007, Coca-Cola light and Sanoma Magazines have joined forces to create the world’s first soft drink combined with a magazine, using the labeling innovation. This is a great concept that could be recruited in the near future by many corporations. [34]

Portable Projector Concept

[36]

This concept could allow the Industry to project videos and contents such as photos or ads into a wall. This could come out in a near future be we don't think it would be a game-changer for this industry but another perk to the transition to the digital world.

   The E-Sheet Concept

[59]

In ten to 20 years, consumers will see e-devices with magazine-quality color, viewable in bright sunlight but requiring low power. This is water-proof. it also could bend, dropped, and rolled. [59]

The Mag+

This prototype is called Mag+ which is being developed by Bonnier R&D company. Basically, it's more convenient than the current iPad. It looks like It's a very responsive, neat, and sleek device to use. Here is a video on how it works, but you could skip it to 3:00 to see exactly how it work.
