NAME: Michael Stern Hart

DATE: March 8, 1947-September 6, 2011

Michael Hart was a active student at the University of Illinois. Inspired and drawn to technology, Hart was known to be a hands-on futurist. After he was granted access to significant computing power at the University, he came across a free copy of the Declaration of Indepence that then inspired him to type the text into the computer and distribute it to others using a computer network. Little did he know, this would be the start to a lifetime career, and one of the largest online literary projects.

In 1971 Hart created the "e-book". which you could access and read over the internet. As Hart created more e-books the it then turned into a library of online books, that he then called Project Gutenberg. Today Project Gutenberg is still one of the largest and long lasting sites to download e-books from, and as i-pads and kindles become more popular, Harts' creation of the "e-book" will live on.
